I have called for the abolition of ICE, worked to defend immigrants here in CA-10, and been in frequent communication with the immigrant-serving organizations in our community. Image Sincerely, Mark DeSaulnier Member of Congress ON CAPITOL HILL Mark Supports Responsible Effort to End Partial Government Shutdown Democrats in Congress have been pushing for meaningful reforms to rein in cruel and illegal immigration enforcement policies at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which operate under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Disagreements over DHS funding have resulted in a shutdown of this Department since February 14 as Republicans refuse to hold the Administration accountable for its abuses. Congressman DeSaulnier and over 100 other House Democrats support a bill (H.R. 7481) to fund critical parts of the DHS that do not conduct immigration enforcement, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Last week, House Democrats filed a procedural motion known as discharge petition that would force a vote on H.R. 7481 if signed by a majority of Members of Congress. Passing this bill would restore paychecks for TSA agents and fund federal disaster response programs while allowing more time to negotiate significant changes to ICE, CBP, and the President's disastrous immigration agenda. Image Congressman DeSaulnier Votes Against Bill Undermining Public Land Protections Last week, the House advanced the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act (H.R. 556), legislation that would limit the federal government's ability to restrict the use of lead ammunition and tackle on public lands and waters. This bill would block efforts to address the harmful environmental and public health impacts of lead contamination on wildlife and ecosystems, and limit science-based management of public lands. Despite the Congressman's opposition, the bill passed the House and now awaits further action in the Senate.​​​​​​​ Mark Opposes Harmful Immigration Bills Since coming into office, the Trump Administration has perpetuated a lawless campaign of mass immigration enforcement that is undermining the rights, safety, and wellbeing of immigrants and U.S. citizens alike. Last week, the House of Representatives considered two bills that would further the President's extreme immigration agenda by stripping away due process rights for some legal immigrants. H.R. 1958 and H.R. 4638 would enable the Trump Administration to deport individuals who they accuse of certain crimes, even if those individuals were never charged or convicted in a court of law. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's strong opposition, both bills passed the House and now await further action in the U.S. Senate.​​​​​​​ Congressman DeSaulnier Meets with Constituents and Local Leaders in DC Office Last week, Mark welcomed constituents as well as city and regional leaders to his Washington, D.C. office to discuss a range of issues including mitigating wildfire risk, supporting students with disabilities, funding medical research, bolstering mental health resources, and more. ​​​​​​ Image COMMUNITY PROJECT FUNDING Organized Retail Theft Prevention and Prosecution Project To address increased levels of retail theft crimes, Mark secured $600,000 for the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office to increase public safety by creating an Organized Retail Theft Prevention and Prosecution Unit and helping local law enforcement agencies better confront retail theft crimes. ​​​​​​​ Image Public Safety Body Worn Camera Equipment Upgrade Project Congressman DeSaulnier delivered $1 million in federal funding to the City of Walnut Creek and the Walnut Creek Police Department to purchase 120 body worn cameras and to promote transparency, accountability, and public trust in local law enforcement.
