Sorensen Delivers Over $1 Million in Federal Grants to Boost Energy Efficiency for Farmers Across Central and Northwest Illinois

Image June 23, 2025 Press Release Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) today announced more than $1 million in U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development grants awarded to local farmers through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). These investments will help farmers across the 17th District reduce energy costs, improve efficiency, and continue feeding America with more sustainable operations. “From grain dryers to solar arrays, these investments are making a real difference for the farmers who power our local economies,” said Congressman Sorensen. “I’m proud to help bring these dollars home to support family farms and rural businesses. When we invest in our farmers, we’re investing in the long-term strength and sustainability of our entire region.” “The REAP program can really help farmers update old, inefficient grain drying systems by using new technology and more efficient grain dryers,” said. Grant Recipient, Dorothea Hopkins . “This helps increase productivity in the field and creates a more uniform grain sample when delivering grain.” These awards are part of a broader federal effort to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy systems in rural communities. In total, these projects are expected to save farmers over $170,000 annually in energy costs and replace more than 2.2 million kilowatt-hours — enough energy to power over 220 homes each year. Congressman Sorensen continues to advocate for smart, targeted investments in rural infrastructure and agriculture that create jobs, lower costs, and build a more sustainable future for Illinois farmers.
