Congressman Cleaver Votes to Pass Bipartisan Funding Bill, Avoid Another Government Shutdown

September 1, 2026 Press Release (Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) voted in favor of a Continuing Resolution that maintains funding for federal programs through December 11. The bipartisan legislation was passed by the House of Representatives by a vote of 370-48, averting another government shutdown under Republican leadership. “Government shutdowns are deeply harmful to Missouri families and workers across our congressional district. Thankfully, after overseeing the longest government shutdown in history last year, Republicans in the House, Senate, and White House have agreed to work with Democrats on legislation that will keep the government funded, workers paid, and programs running for Americans nationwide,” said Congressman Cleaver . “I was proud to vote for today’s Continuing Resolution that will maintain current funding levels while allowing lawmakers to continue the important work of crafting a comprehensive, bipartisan budget that will help lower costs for families and meet the needs of the American people in every community,” Congressman Cleaver concluded . Emanuel Cleaver, II is the U.S. Representative for Missouri's Fifth Congressional District, which includes Kansas City, Independence, Lee's Summit, Raytown, Grandview, Sugar Creek, Greenwood, Blue Springs, North Kansas City, Gladstone, and Claycomo. He is a member of the exclusive House Financial Services Committee and Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance.
