Shaheen Highlights Federal Funding She Secured for Affordable Housing in Salem, Health Care Accessibility in Nashua

(Salem, NH) – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a senior member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, continued her “Affordability Action Tour” with a visit to Nashua to see critical radiology equipment acquired by Southern New Hampshire Health to increase health care accessibility and Salem to tour the future site of an affordable housing development. Both projects were made possible with Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) that Shaheen helped secure. Photos from today’s events can be found HERE. First in Nashua, Shaheen toured Southern New Hampshire Health with hospital leadership and learned more about how their purchase of a PET/CT scanner has improved care for patients. In the Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 government funding legislation, Shaheen secured $453,000 in CDS for the purchase of this critical medical imagery technology to increase health care access for the entire region. Shaheen’s visit comes roughly one year after congressional Republicans cut billions in federal health care funding. “It’s vital that health care centers in our communities have the most up to date medical equipment and facilities so that they can better serve Granite Staters,” said Senator Shaheen. “With health care costs rising, I was glad to help Southern New Hampshire Health secure Congressionally Directed Spending to get a new PET/CT scanner and to see some of the work the hospital is doing to update their facilities so that patients can get the care they need right in Nashua.” Senator Shaheen has a long track record of securing resources to support the enhancement of health facilities across New Hampshire. Shaheen secured millions of dollars to support key health care priorities in New Hampshire in the Fiscal Year 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education and Related Agencies appropriations bill, including funding for health care facility improvement and workforce development. In Salem, Shaheen joined local officials and the Salem Housing Authority to tour the site of the upcoming Millville Street Apartments, to hear updates on the project and discuss her work in Washington to lower housing costs in the state. Shaheen secured $3 million in CDS in the FY 26 government funding legislation for the development, which will expand the supply of affordable housing for seniors, individuals with disabilities and veterans in the Salem community. “The shortage of affordable housing in our state and record-high costs are pricing too many people out of the market and making it harder for families to live and work in New Hampshire,” said Senator Shaheen. “That’s why I’m working in Washington to secure federal funding to help build new, affordable housing in communities like Salem. The housing crisis in New Hampshire won’t be solved overnight, but new developments like the future Millville Street Apartments are an example of the kind of projects we need to invest in to help more families access housing they can afford.” Shaheen is leading efforts in the Senate to lower housing costs and increase the supply of affordable units, including her efforts to help pass the landmark 21 st Century Renewing Opportunity in the American Dream (ROAD) to Housing Act earlier this year. The legislation includes three New Hampshire-focused provisions Shaheen secured—the Strategy and Investment in Rural Housing Preservation Act, Streamlining Rural Housing Act and the Preservation and Reinvestment Initiative in Community Enhancement (PRICE) Act —to expand supply of affordable housing, streamline construction and lower costs in the Granite State and across the country. In the bipartisan Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies Appropriations bill, Shaheen secured upwards of $9 million in federal funding for affordable housing in New Hampshire. Recently, Senator Shaheen visited Franconia , West Lebanon and Laconia to discuss policy solutions to lower housing costs for communities across the state. ###
