LaMonica McIver (NJ-10) led all New Jersey Democrats to demand that the Department of Education reverse course on their decision to strip $85.5 million in federal funding from 20 New Jersey school districts in a letter. “These funds were earmarked for vital capital improvements to ensure safe and healthy learning environments for students and teachers,” wrote McIver and the members. “Punishing local districts for global delays outside of their control not only sets a dangerous precedent but directly harms students and staff who are depending on these projects for their well-being.” These revoked funds were designated to ensure essential facilities and healthy learning environments for New Jersey students. The New Jersey Department of Education received formal notice from the Trump administration that their funding approvals—originally extended through March 28, 2026—would instead expire a year earlier, on March 28, 2025, the same day the announcement was made. The federal government’s function is to build safe and resilient public education systems. Because of the Trump administration’s actions, the affected New Jersey schools will face major delays to critical projects that keep kids safe and comfortable during the school day including improved HVAC systems and electrical infrastructure.
