In case you missed it, U.S Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, grilled Emil Bove III, the nominee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit about his conduct, ethics, and judgment.

Booker slams Trump judicial nominee: ‘Complete disregard for the rule of law’

“The White House nominated Mr. Bove, over my, and Senator (Andy) Kim’s strong objections, while we were in the process of actually interviewing the other candidates the White House itself proposed,” said Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., a member of the Judiciary Committee.

The controversy escalated Tuesday after a whistleblower report accused Bove of instructing Justice Department attorneys to defy court orders in deportation cases—allegations he forcefully denied during the hearing.

Booker and all other Democratic members of the committee filed a professional misconduct complaint against Bove with the New York State Bar.

“There is no scenario under which the White House counsel could believe that this nomination would be acceptable,” Booker said. “Moreover, Mr. Bove’s record makes it clear that he has no business serving a lifetime on the federal bench.”

Booker added, “Mr. Bove has a complete disregard for the rule of law.”

In that meeting, Mr. Bove dangled the possibility of a promotion to any lawyer who would sign a motion seeking dismissal of the case against Mr. Adams, according to people familiar with the events.

At the end of the questioning, Mr. Booker suggested that Mr. Bove might have lied to the lawmakers.

“I am hoping that more evidence is going to come out that showed that you lied before this committee,” Mr. Booker said.

Democrats say that Bove was being willfully evasive – New Jersey Senator Cory Booker went so far as to accuse Bove of perjury – and listed it as yet one more reason Bove should not be confirmed to a lifetime judgeship in a New Jersey-based seat. But with President Donald Trump strongly behind Bove, whomhe nominated(and once employed as his personal lawyer), Republicans on the committee were far more amenable to Bove and downplayed his past controversies.

As is typical for judicial nominations in the U.S. Senate, today’s hearing did not include a vote; that will likely come sometime in July. In the weeks leading up to then, Booker and his fellow Democrats said they’ll work to convince enough of their Republican colleagues to vote against Bove’s nomination, either in committee or on the Senate floor.

“I think there is a lot of evidence here that’s going to cast a shadow over this nomination in the eyes of a lot of Republicans in the Senate,” Booker said during a press gaggle following today’s hearing.

“We’re hoping that will be enough for him to lose the support of the Senate,” he added.
