Hickenlooper, Democratic Colleagues Renew Fight for IVF Access Amid Continued GOP Attacks on Reproductive Rights
WASHINGTON –
Today, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper joined 28 of his Democratic colleagues to introduce the
Protect IVF Act
to establish nationwide access to IVF and prevent state-level efforts to block access to IVF treatment.
“Every family deserves the chance to grow. IVF has made that possible for hundreds of thousands of families, including mine,”
said Hickenlooper.
“We’re committed to fighting any attack on reproductive freedoms that put those families at risk.”
Since the repeal of Roe v. Wade, extreme Republicans have targeted Americans’ access to IVF. The
Protect IVF Act
would guard against such attacks by creating a statutory right for patients to access IVF services, a right for doctors to provide IVF treatment in accordance with medical standards as well as a right for insurance carriers to cover IVF without prohibition, limitation, interference or impediment. By establishing a statutory right, this would preempt any state effort to limit access and help ensure no hopeful parent – or their doctors – are punished for trying to start or grow a family.
Hickenlooper recently
called out
the Trump admin’s reckless decision to fire the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) team responsible for providing support and unbiased information for American families seeking fertility treatment.
The
Protect IVF Act
is endorsed by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, Endocrine Society, MomsRising, Indivisible, What to Expect Project, Legal Momentum: The Women’s Legal Defense and Education Fund, National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, National Center for Lesbian Rights, Center for Reproductive Rights and the National Women’s Law Center.
