Congressman Pat Harrigan Votes to Pass the Assisting Small Businesses Not Fraudsters Act to Protect Taxpayer Dollars

February 24, 2025 Press Release Contact: Lexi Kranich (814) 380-4408 WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10) voted to pass H.R. 825 , the Assisting Small Businesses Not Fraudsters Act. This bill strengthens the integrity of the Small Business Administration (SBA) by prohibiting individuals convicted of financial misconduct or fraud from accessing SBA financial assistance, ensuring taxpayer dollars go where they’re needed most. “Every dollar intended for struggling small businesses that ends up in the hands of fraudsters is a betrayal of hardworking Americans,” said Congressman Harrigan. “This bill draws a hard line. If you’ve defrauded the government, you won’t get another penny. Period.” The Assisting Small Businesses Not Fraudsters Act blocks individuals convicted of financial crimes, including fraud related to COVID-19 relief programs like the Paycheck Protection Program, Restaurant Revitalization Fund, and Shuttered Venue Operators grants, from receiving future SBA assistance, except for disaster loans. The restriction also applies to small businesses if an owner, officer, director, or key employee has been convicted of such crimes. Congressman Harrigan is calling on the Senate to act quickly and pass this critical legislation to safeguard small businesses and protect taxpayer resources. Issues : Jobs and Economic Growth
