Miller-Meeks Joins Iowa Congressional Delegation in Historic Time Capsule Letter
June 19, 2026 Press Release Iowa – Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks joined Sens. Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst and Reps. Ashley Hinson, Zach Nunn, and Randy Feenstra in submitting a letter on behalf of all Iowans for inclusion in the Semiquincentennial Congressional Time Capsule, commemorating 250 years of American independence. The letter celebrates Iowa's culture, spirit, and historic contributions to the nation and the world. Around July 4th, 2026, the capsule will be sealed and buried in the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C., where it will remain for 250 years until July 4th, 2276. "'Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain,'" the delegation wrote . "Our state motto reflects the grit and resilience spanning generations of Iowans proud to call the Hawkeye State home." The letter highlights Iowa's pioneering contributions to free public education, aviation, agriculture, and innovation, from John Froelich's invention of the first internal-combustion tractor in Waterloo to Norman Borlaug's seed genetics breakthroughs that saved billions from starvation. The Wright brothers' time in Cedar Rapids, where a toy helicopter sparked their interest in aviation, is also noted. The letter honors Iowa's civic spirit, the legacy of 4-H founder Jessie Field Shambaugh, the Iowa State Fair, and the state's proud tradition of veterans service. It also recognizes Iowa's role in advancing freedom and equality, including Carrie Chapman Catt's decades of work securing the 19th Amendment. "From one generation to the next, Iowans embrace America's entrepreneurial spirit and tirelessly pursue the blessings of economic freedom," the members wrote .
