Neighborhoods like Atlanta’s Ashview Heights have been impacted by these anonymous shell companies, leaving blighted properties in communities with no record of a property owner. Congresswoman Nikema Williams highlighted how the Corporate Transparency Act could shine a light on this issue as Republicans attempt to dismantle the legislation. Remarks as prepared: “I represent Georgia’s Fighting Fifth Congressional District, centered in Atlanta. And I want to talk about something that sounds complicated but is actually very simple. Foreign criminals laundering money through American real estate using anonymous LLCs. Here is how it works. They buy property, the LLC has no identifiable owner, the property sits while the money gets clean. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution documented exactly what anonymous LLC ownership looks like on the ground in Ashview Heights when a shell company owned a blighted property and a reporter spent a week trying to find the actual owners. This is because the U.S. law didn’t require anyone to say. And that is a problem. We can’t know if it’s a small investor, a multinational company, or a criminal network. And right now we have no way to find out. Congress passed the Corporate Transparency Act to fix this but Republicans are determined to roll it back.
