May 28, 2026 Press Release PROVIDENCE, RI – TODAY, Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI-01), along with Senators Jack Reed (D-RI) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Congressman Seth Magaziner (DI-RI-02), condemned President Donald Trump’s executive order to insert the federal government into state-run elections and interfere with election mail, in a letter to U.S. Postmaster General David Steiner. The letter warns that Executive Order 14399 raises constitutional alarms, exceeds executive authority, and threatens the integrity and reliability of vote-by-mail systems used by Rhode Islanders and voters nationwide. The Members write: “President Trump’s voter suppression order is another step in a long line of actions designed to spur chaos, distrust our elections, and diminish public confidence in our election systems when they depend on stability and trust” “ Americans have voted by mail since the Civil War, allowing servicemembers to participate in our elections while deployed . In every generation since, voters across the country have relied on the USPS to cast their ballots. Vote-by-mail is not new or experimental, but a trusted part of our democracy. Rhode Island has a secure, transparent, and trusted vote-by-mail system .” A full copy of the letter can be found HERE . Additional Information: The letter calls out the Executive Order for directing the Department of Homeland Security to overstep its authority, warns against politicizing USPS, and raises the alarm that President Trump may use it to undermine our elections. The Members called on USPS to: Refuse to implement Executive Order 14399 Publicly affirm its independence and neutrality in election administration Provide Congress with a report on USPS’s plan to ensure the timely delivery of mail ballots The Rhode Island delegation reaffirmed its commitment to protecting voting rights, safeguarding election integrity, and ensuring that USPS remains free from political interference. ###
