Jackson today issued the following statement explaining his vote against H.R. 30, the so-called “Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act.” "I stand unequivocally with survivors of domestic violence and remain committed to ensuring justice for all victims. However, I voted ‘no’ on H.R. 30 because it is a deeply flawed bill that fails to address the systemic issues driving domestic violence while disproportionately targeting immigrant communities. This legislation risks exacerbating racial profiling and creating additional barriers for immigrant women seeking help. By focusing on the immigration status of offenders, it distracts from the critical need to provide support services, strengthen prevention efforts, and address the root causes of abuse—gender inequality, economic insecurity, and systemic injustice. We cannot protect survivors by creating laws that may silence them out of fear of deportation or retaliation. This bill could further enable abusers to manipulate their victims, leaving many without access to justice or safety. It is no wonder that over 200 advocacy and religious organizations stand in opposition to this harmful legislation. If my Republican colleagues are serious about combating domestic violence, they should prioritize reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, expanding survivor services, and ensuring robust enforcement to hold perpetrators accountable. H.R. 30 is a missed opportunity to work on real, comprehensive solutions that unite us in protecting survivors and preventing abuse."
