Senator Joan Huffman Files Senate Bill 5 & Senate Joint Resolution 3
to Create the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas
AUSTIN, TX – Today, Senator Joan Huffman, R-Houston, filed Senate Bill 5, a visionary proposal
to establish the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (DPRIT). This initiative aims
to position Texas as a national leader in combating dementia and related disorders, accelerating
groundbreaking research, and improving the lives of millions of Texans.
“Dementia and related disorders rob families of their loved ones and places an immense burden on
Texas families and our healthcare system,” said Senator Huffman. “Senate Bill 5 is a game-
changer—it’s about innovation, collaboration, and a fierce commitment to the health of our state.
I’m proud to champion this effort to give Texas the tools to lead the charge against this devastating
disease.”
The DPRIT, contingent on voter approval of a constitutional amendment via Senate Joint
Resolution 3, would provide $3 billion over the next decade to fuel cutting-edge research, expand
Texas’ research capabilities, and foster collaboration among universities, medical institutions, and
other partners. This investment would empower the institute to award grants, drive medical
breakthroughs, and develop new strategies for prevention and treatment—all while creating jobs
and boosting the state’s economy.
“I want to thank Lt. Governor Dan Patrick for making this initiative a top Senate priority and I
look forward to working with my colleagues to improve the lives of Texans for generations to
come.”
