Gallego Visits Mohave and La Paz Counties, Hosts Veterans Town Hall in Kingman
KINGMAN, AZ – Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), a Marine combat veteran and member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, held a town hall focused on veterans’ issues in Kingman, Arizona.
At the town hall, Gallego highlighted legislation he fought to include in the Senate-passed21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which would expand veterans’ access to affordable housing. HisHousing Unhoused Disabled Veterans Act (HUDVA)would prevent VA disability income from being counted against veterans when determining eligibility for housing vouchers and other subsidized housing programs.
“There are veterans who are not taking their VA disability because they’re afraid they’re going to get kicked off housing,”said Senator Gallego.“You don’t want to put [a veteran] in a situation where they have to decide: am I going to take the disability, or am I going to try to get the housing and then still find work?”
Gallego’s opening remarks also focused on Trump’s war in Iran and his experience as an Iraq war veteran.
“Obviously, a top of mind for me is the war in Iran. I did not think we should be going to war, just to be 100% honest,”the Senator said.“I don’t regret my service to my country. I don’t regret serving with the men that I did, but going to Iraq was a mistake. And starting this war is only a bigger mistake.”
Kingman is located in Mohave County, which has a veteran population nearly twice the national average. During his visit to Mohave County and La Paz County, Senator Gallego also met with leadership from the Colorado River Indian Tribes, Hualapai Tribe, town ofParker, and Lake Havasu City to discuss Colorado River water management and economic development in Mohave County.
