Congressman Pat Harrigan Votes to Hold the Department of Energy Accountable

March 24, 2025 Press Release Contact: Lexi Kranich (814) 380-4408 WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10) voted to pass H.R. 359 , the Cost-Share Accountability Act of 2025, which increases transparency within the Department of Energy by requiring detailed reporting on when and why the agency waives cost-sharing requirements for federal energy projects. “Washington loves to spend, but hates to explain,” said Congressman Harrigan. “If the Department of Energy is cutting deals with taxpayer dollars, Congress needs to know why. The American people deserve to know where their money is going and why exceptions are being made.” H.R. 359 updates the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to require the Secretary of Energy to submit quarterly reports to Congress on how and when the agency reduces or eliminates cost-sharing requirements for its research, development, and commercialization programs. These reports give lawmakers visibility into how federal funds are being matched and spent. Congressman Harrigan is calling on the Senate to act swiftly and help ensure greater oversight and accountability in the Department of Energy’s use of taxpayer money.
