Sullivan Resolution Highlights Choose Respect Day as National Call to End Domestic Violence, Support Survivors

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Senate today unanimously passed Senator Dan Sullivan’s (R-Alaska) resolution affirming October 1stas national Choose Respect Day, coinciding with the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The resolution, building on Sen. Sullivan’s Choose Respect Act, signed into law in 2022, highlights the urgent need to promote safety, respect, and healthy relationships—particularly among adolescents and young adults—and calls for nationwide action to end domestic violence.

“When I first launched the Choose Respect initiative as Alaska’s Attorney General, I saw the power of communities coming together to confront domestic violence and sexual assault head on,”Senator Sullivan said.“When I came to the Senate, I knew our work wasn’t over. That’s why I authored the Choose Respect Act, worked to get it signed into law, and have continued to work across the aisle to make sure survivors have access to legal services through initiatives like the POWER Act. This resolution, recognizing Choose Respect Day on the first day of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, reaffirms that respect must be the foundation of our homes, our schools, and our communities nationwide."
As Alaska’s Attorney General, Sullivan launched the state’sChoose Respectinitiative, holding rallies in villages and cities across the state to confront the scourge of domestic violence and sexual assault. In the Senate, he authored theChoose Respect Act, which was enacted in 2022, and has led bipartisan initiatives such as thePOWER Actto expand legal services for survivors.
