ICYMI: Cassidy Applauds Trump Administration’s Steps to Implement his School Choice Legislation
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) today released a statement celebrating the Trump administration’s plan to advance his Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA) that he championed and secured as part of last year’s Working Families Tax Cuts. On October 1, the U.S. Department of Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service unveiled plans to implement the Education Freedom Tax Credit ahead of its January 2027 launch. “Parents want to make decisions that allow their child to succeed. This law helps them do that,” said Dr. Cassidy. “I’m proud to have led efforts on this historic expansion of educational freedom.” Background As Chairman of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, Cassidy is a longtime advocate for school choice. ECCA provides scholarships for an estimated two million students in elementary and secondary education settings for tuition, fees, supplies, and equipment for the enrollment or attendance at an elementary or secondary school. Cassidy also led efforts to encourage U.S. Governors to opt-in to the federal school choice scholarship tax credit. Cassidy worked with U.S. Representative Adrian Smith (R-NE) on legislation to ensure scholarship donors’ tax benefits are not reduced based on their marital status. Treasury’s newly announced proposal reflects that approach: married couples filing jointly could claim up to $3,400 annually for scholarship donations. Additionally, Cassidy led a HELP Committee hearing on increasing education options for families at the beginning of the year. ###
