Warren Statement On Her Bipartisan College Transparency Act Advancing Out of Senate Committee

Washington, D.C. — Following the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee’s bipartisan 21-1 vote to advance Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bill Cassidy’s (R-La.) College Transparency Act out of committee, Senator Warren released the following statement: “It’s a no-brainer that students and families should have access to critical information like college costs and employment outcomes when they make one of the most important financial decisions of their lives. Today’s bipartisan committee vote is an important step toward getting this common-sense solution over the finish line. It’s time to pass this law.” The College Transparency Act would require the federal government to collect and report to the public comprehensive data on student outcomes and college costs — such as completion rates, post-college earnings, average net price, and average student loan debt — across colleges and majors. This would help ensure that students and families have the information they need to find a high-quality and affordable school to pursue a post-secondary education. The bill would also promote better outcomes by giving schools, researchers, and lawmakers data to improve our country’s post-secondary education system. Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) and Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) lead the House companion bill. Chair Cassidy and Senator Warren first introduced the College Transparency Act in 2017.
