Rep. Angie Craig Introduces Legislation to Protect Access to Contraception

February 6, 2025 Press Release WASHINGTON, DC – This week, U.S. Representative Angie Craig introduced legislation to protect access to contraception and defend health care providers’ ability to distribute contraceptives no matter where they live. The Right to Contraception Act would create a statutory right for people to obtain and use contraceptives – like birth control pills, IUDs and condoms – and grant the Attorney General the ability to take civil action against any state or government official that implements or enforces legislation preventing access to contraceptives. “Access to birth control should be a given, but with extreme Republicans chipping away at women’s reproductive rights by the day, we have no choice but to enshrine this protection into law,” said Rep. Craig. “I will always stand up for our fundamental rights and freedoms, and that’s why I’m proud to be co-leading the Right to Contraception Act .” In July 2022, the Right to Contraception Act passed the House in a bipartisan vote (228-195). That same month, Republicans blocked an attempt in the U.S. Senate to pass the bill by unanimous consent. They did the same in June 2023. In June 2024, Republicans once again blocked Senate Democrats’ attempt to pass the bill on the floor. Rep. Craig introduced the bill alongside Reps.
