Congressman Dan Goldman Presents $354,000 Grant Award to Kings County District Attorney’s Office

September 10, 2026 Press Release New York, NY - U.S. Representative Dan Goldman (NY-10) presented the Kings County District Attorney’s Office with a $354,000 Community Project funding award. The award will be used to bolster the Outreach and Assistance Response (SOAR) program. The program is designed to conduct immediate outreach to violent crime victims and their families. Rep. Goldman requested and secured funding for the project, which was included in a package of bills to fund the federal government. Goldman secured $13,756,000 for 15 community projects in NY-10 in the FY 2026 appropriations process. Rep. Goldman presented the award to Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “Violent crime often leaves lasting trauma for victims and their families, who benefit greatly from immediate assistance,” said Congressman Dan Goldman. “I am proud to have secured $354,000 to fund the Kings County District Attorney’s Office’s program that does just that – from financial help to mental health assistance.. Thank you to District Attorney Gonzalez for his leadership on this issue to provide Brooklyn families with the respect and care they deserve." Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said , “While Brooklyn is experiencing a public safety renaissance with historic lows in homicides and shootings, there are still too many families dealing with the trauma of a shooting, an assault or the loss of a loved one. And even when there has not yet been an arrest or a criminal case, victims and families may need immediate support. The new SOAR program will offer just that and fill gaps that traditional compensation programs cannot always cover, allowing our counselors to assist and stand with every victim of serious violence and their families. I am grateful for Congressman Dan Goldman who secured the grant that will allow us to launch this important initiative.” Kings County District Attorney’s SOAR (Support Outreach and Assistance Response) conducts outreach and provides support to victims of violent assaults and homicides regardless of whether anyone has been arrested for the crime. Typically the victim’s services staff in a DA’s office only comes into contact with a victim once an arrest has been made and a case generated. The SOAR team responds to violent crimes even when there is no case in the DA’s office. The response team provides assistance with victim compensation, counseling, and relevant case related information. The SOAR team also engages in community outreach to inform the public of KCDA’s services and commitment to public safety. Immediately following a violent incident or homicide, usually within the first 24 to 48 hours, SOAR counselors work with the NYC Police Department to obtain contact information of survivors or surviving family members. In cases where other agencies or organizations, such as the offices of elected officials or community-based organizations, have already had contact with the victim or family, SOAR counselors work with those agencies to ensure a warm handoff from those organizations to our experts in trauma, crime victim’s rights, and criminal justice.
