Suozzi, Leader DeRiggi-Whitton, and Mayor Villafane Announce Expansion of Sea Cliff Sewer System

September 10, 2026 Press Release Suozzi secured $1.1 million in Community Project Funding grants to help fund the expansion Glen Cove, NY —Congressman Suozzi (D-NY) today joined Nassau County Legislature  Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton (D-Glen Cove), Sea Cliff Mayor Elena Villafane, and local  residents in Sea Cliff to announce the expansion of the Sea Cliff sewer system. The $6.5 million  expansion will utilize more than $1.1 million in funds Congressman Suozzi secured in the  FY2026 Community Project Funding grants. Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia  DeRiggi-Whitton secured an additional $4 million in bond authorization over the next two years  to support the expansion of the sanitary sewer system in Sea Cliff, and local resources will cover  the balance. “This is a major accomplishment by Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton to help sewer critical areas in  Sea Cliff and protect our precious Hempstead Harbor,” Congressman Suozzi said. “The  continued success of Sea Cliff’s sewer expansion initiative is an outstanding illustration of what  can be accomplished when all levels of government work collaboratively to solve problems for  the communities we serve. I am excited to see how the $1 million in federal funding that I  secured from the federal government has become a catalyst for millions more in County-level  support spearheaded by Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton in partnership with Village leaders. This is  transformational.” The funds will be applied toward sewering a total of 2,860 linear feet on these streets: • Prospect Avenue between Carpenter Avenue & Albin Street (900 linear feet, 20 service  connections) • Winding Way between 7th Avenue and Prospect Avenue (860 linear feet, 12 service  connections) • The Drive between Park Way and Carpenter Avenue (370 linear feet, five service  connections) • Park Way between 7th Avenue and Prospect Avenue (730 feet, eight service connections) The forthcoming project will build upon previous work, completed during the summer of 2021,  which sewered portions of Prospect, Maple, 12th, Sea Cliff, Summit, Central, 8th, and 7th  Avenues, as well as all of Fairview Place. The expansion will also play a key role in the  continued effort to clean up the Long Island Sound. By converting septic systems to sewer  systems, this project will reduce nitrogen pollution into the Sound, helping impove the water  quality of one of our nation’s great treasures. Congressman Suozzi has long been a champion for protecting Long Island's environment,  advocating for clean water, open space preservation, and investments that improve the health of  the Long Island Sound, including delivering a 1000% increase in funding to improve the Long  Island Sound since he came to Congress in 2017. His leadership has earned recognition from the  New York League of Conservation Voters, which this year named him a Clean Water Champion  for his decades-long commitment to safeguarding Long Island's water quality and securing  federal support for critical environmental projects. “Since Sea Cliff Village officials received their first funding for sewer expansion in 2014, Sea  Cliff Avenue was our first area to focus on. Completing that was, in and of itself, a major  accomplishment because it opened the doors for businesses to flourish and grow without having  to consider the limitations of septic systems,” Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton said. “The  fact remains that, of the 10 percent of Nassau County that is not sewered, about 90 percent falls  within District 11, and that is why it was so important to pursue a vision that expands the initial  project to connect additional streets to the gravity line that was completed five years ago.
