ICYMI: Annual Shaheen-Led Bipartisan Resolution Designating National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day Unanimously Passes Senate

(Washington, DC) – Last week, a bipartisan resolution annually led by U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) designating August 21 as "Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day” unanimously passed the U.S. Senate. The bipartisan push aims to raise awareness around dangers of fentanyl, highlight prevention efforts, encourage drug-free lifestyles and recognize the lives lost to drug overdoses. “I’m glad the Senate came together to unanimously pass our bipartisan resolution designating August 21 as National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day and memorializing those who have lost their lives to drug overdoses,” said Senator Shaheen. “There’s always more work to be done to address the substance use disorder crisis in New Hampshire, and driving more awareness in our communities around the dangers of fentanyl use is one important way we can prevent the loss of more lives.” A copy of the bipartisan resolution can be read HERE . As a senior member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee and Ranking Member of the Senate Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies (Ag-FDA) Appropriations Subcommittee, Shaheen is committed to fighting the substance use disorder crisis in New Hampshire. Earlier this year, Shaheen renewed a years-long effort to authorize billions in federal funding for substance use disorder treatment and prevention with the reintroduction of the Turn the Tide Act . Shaheen also leads the bipartisan End Veterans Overdose Act to expand access to naloxone and other overdose reversal agents to our veterans, which went on to unanimously clear the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee—a significant step toward passing the bill into law. In the Fiscal Year 2026 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations bill that was signed into law, Shaheen secured provisions that will ensure veterans can better access health care, including substance use disorder treatment. In 2025, Senator Shaheen introduced the Keeping Drugs Out of School Act alongside Senator Grassley to establish a new grant program to educate students about the dangers of synthetic opioids. ###
