Senator Molly Cook Responds to the Passage of SB 2,
Private School Vouchers
AUSTIN, TX – Following the final Senate approval of Senate Bill 2, which establishes educational
savings accounts, better known as private school vouchers, in Texas, State Senator Molly Cook
(D-Houston) offered the following statement:
“For over 70 years, Texas protected our commitment to public education from the
influence of powerful and wealthy private interests. Today, that legacy died. This
$1 billion private school voucher program is a fundamental betrayal of our
constitutional obligation to support and maintain an efficient system of free public
schools.
“The neighborhood schools in Senate District 15 serve as anchors in our
communities. These are the schools that accept every child, regardless of ability,
background, or circumstance.
“If we truly believed in the will of the people, if we genuinely cared about
democracy and transparency, the Texas Legislature would have put this highly
contested decision where it belongs – in the hands of Texas voters.
“My allegiance will always be to the people of SD 15, Texas children, our teachers,
and our communities. Texans will not forget this betrayal by our legislature, and
we will keep fighting to keep public money in public schools.”
