Highs and Lows: Protecting Kids Online

As we all know, the digital world is changing faster than parents can keep up with, and our kids are growing up in an online environment that barely existed a few years ago. My wife and I raised six children, which we thought was complicated back then. But now, as a parent of parents, I’ve seen firsthand how overwhelming it is to raise children in our social media-driven world. That’s why this week my high was helping advance meaningful legislation to give families the tools and transparency they need to keep their kids safer online. The legislation that passed in the Commerce Committee included my CHATBOT Act and the Kids Online Safety Act . These will help protect children without stifling innovation and empower parents. My low, of course, is the terrible wildfires we are having in Utah and across the American West. We’re only one-fourth of the way through our state’s typical fire season, and Utah has already experienced nearly 800 total wildfires with nearly 800,000 acres burned. This was an issue that I discussed with a bipartisan group of my colleagues and experts during a roundtable focused on extreme weather.
