Representative John W. Mannion Announces Federal Public Safety Funding for Syracuse and Onondaga County

August 14, 2026 Press Release $151,000 federal grant will support security upgrades, emergency response capabilities, specialized police equipment, and public safety operations SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Representative John W. Mannion today announced that the City of Syracuse will receive $151,005 in federal funding to support public safety initiatives carried out by the Syracuse Police Department and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office. Representative John W. Mannion said, “Everyone deserves to live in a safe community, and this funding will provide local law enforcement with additional tools to protect residents and respond to emergencies. It will strengthen security at public facilities and large gatherings while supporting the specialized officers and equipment needed to keep Syracuse and Onondaga County safe. I’ll continue working to ensure our region receives its fair share of federal funding and that local law enforcement agencies have what they need to do their jobs.” The Syracuse Police Department will use its portion of the award to purchase hardened security barriers for the newly renovated Public Safety Building, mobile security barriers for mass gathering locations, equipment for its SWAT team, replacement parts for its drone fleet, and support for emergency management incidents. The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office will use its portion of the funding to purchase a snowmobile for its Snowmobile Unit and critical equipment for its SWAT team. City of Syracuse Mayor Sharon Owens said, “Sustaining and modernizing our public safety capabilities is essential to protecting our residents, visitors, and first responders. Thanks to Congressman Mannion, this funding will allow the Syracuse Police Department to take proactive steps to ensure we are prepared for emerging threats, equipped for complex incidents, and able to maintain a high standard of public safety across our City.” Onondaga County Sheriff Toby Shelley said, “Congressman John Mannion remains a steadfast champion for Central New York law enforcement. From securing initial funding for the Sheriff’s Office’s first wellness program during his tenure as State Senator to delivering critical federal funding for a new mobile command vehicle since he has been in Congress, Congressman Mannion consistently ensures local officers have the resources needed to protect our community. That unwavering commitment holds true today with his latest funding announcement, further strengthening our regional public safety operations.” Representative Mannion recently secured over $2 million for new mobile command units for the Syracuse Police Department and Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office. He is also requesting additional funding in FY27 Community Project Funding to help the Sheriff’s Office replace aging patrol vehicles. The funding was awarded by the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.
