Rep. Sykes Announces $33,000 to Canal Fulton for Fire Hose Replacement and Fire Safety Training

October 28, 2026 Rep. Sykes Announces $33,000 to Canal Fulton for Fire Hose Replacement and Fire Safety Training CANAL FULTON, OH — Today, Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) visited the Canal Fulton-Lawrence Township Fire Department to recognize two federal FEMA awards totaling $33,792.69. She provided letters of support for both applications. “Firefighters and first responders are there for us on our worst days, and they should have the tools to do that job safely,” said Rep. Sykes “It was great to see firsthand how these FEMA awards will help Canal Fulton and Lawrence Township by replacing critical equipment and giving local residents and businesses hands-on fire safety training. I was proud to support these applications, and I will keep fighting to bring federal resources home to Northeast Ohio.” “Receiving these FEMA awards is tremendous news for the Canal Fulton community and our regional fire service,” said Fire Chief Shawn Yerian of the Canal Fulton-Lawrence Township Fire Department. “ The funding will allow us to replace outdated fire hoses that our firefighters rely on every day, while also providing a new fire extinguisher training system that addresses one of the most frequent safety-training requests we receive from local businesses. “These are important investments in both firefighter safety and community education, and they are projects we would not have been able to move forward with at this time without federal assistance. We are extremely grateful for Congresswoman Sykes’ support of our applications and her continued support of local fire and EMS services. Her assistance helped make it possible for us to bring these resources back to the community we serve.” The City of Canal Fulton received two awards. The first is for the Regional Fire Hose Replacement Project, funded through an Assistance to Firefighters Grant. FEMA awarded $17,055.55 in federal funding, with a required local share of $852.78, for a total project cost of $17,908.33. The project will replace attack and supply hose within the shared regional response system. The second is for the Fire Extinguisher Training System Project, funded through a Fire Prevention & Safety Grant. FEMA awarded $16,737.14 in federal funding, with a required local share of $836.86, for a total project cost of $17,574.00. The ward funds an augmented-reality training system that allows the department to provide safe, reusable, hands-on public education without live fire, smoke, chemical discharge, or cleanup. Combined, the awards provide $33,792.69 in federal funding toward $35,482.33 in public safety projects. Print Email Share Tweet
