Wyden, Paul, Lummis Reintroduce Bipartisan Bill to Abolish the Selective Service

May 14, 2026 Wyden, Paul, Lummis Reintroduce Bipartisan Bill to Abolish the Selective Service Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senators Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., today introduced a bipartisan bill to end the Selective Service. The Selective Service runs an annual budget of more than $31 million per year, preparing for a draft that has not occurred since 1973. Beginning in December 2026, the Selective Service System will use federal data sources to automatically register males aged 18 to 25 for the military draft pool, due to a policy change signed into law December 18, 2025. “The Selective Service is an outdated program that costs millions of taxpayer dollars to prepare for a military draft that Americans don’t want or need,” Wyden said. “Our volunteer military forces are the strongest in the world, and there is no need to replicate the same draft that sent two million unwilling young men to war 50 years ago. This commonsense bill keeps money in American wallets.” “It has been over 50 years since the draft was last used,” Dr. Paul said. “I’ve long stated that if a war is worth fighting, Congress will vote to declare it and people will volunteer. This outdated government program no longer serves a purpose and should be eliminated permanently.” "The Selective Service System has outlived its purpose and should be abolished. It costs us millions of taxpayer dollars every year while contributing nothing to our national defense,” Lummis said. “ I'm proud to join Senators Wyden and Paul in doing what Washington rarely does - saving taxpayers money and restoring a little more freedom in the process." The bill is endorsed by Center on Conscience and War, World Beyond War, RootsAction.org, Military Law Task Force of the National Lawyers Guild, Resisters.info, Friends Committee on National Legislation, War Resisters League’s National Committee, Fellowship of Reconciliation, American Friends Service Committee, Mennonite Central Committee U.S. and Antiwar.com.
