Congresswoman Escobar Celebrates 90th Anniversary of Social Security

Today, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) released the following statement celebrating the 90 th anniversary of the creation of Social Security: “On August 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, creating an economic lifeline for millions of Americans facing poverty during the Great Depression and millions more in the decades since. “Today, over 132,000 El Pasoans rely on Social Security, including over 100,000 seniors. At a time when this critical program faces some of its greatest threats from DOGE and Republicans intent on dismantling, cutting, or privatizing Social Security, I proudly stand with my Democratic colleagues to protect the hard-earned benefits so many in our community rely on. “90 years ago, Americans across the country witnessed the awesome ability of our federal government to solve difficult problems and change lives for the better. El Pasoans can rest assured I will always fight to ensure every generation has the same dignity, opportunities, and support from the federal government that previous generations were afforded.” Congresswoman Escobar has been a staunch supporter of Social Security. She has cosponsored legislation such as the Social Security 2100 Act and the Hands Off Our Social Security Act . She has also remained committed to protecting the program despite attacks from Republicans and the Trump administration on benefits and DOGE-cuts. # # #
