Quigley Statement on Cross Burning in Grant Park
June 12, 2026 Press Release Today, Chicago Congressman Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement on the cross burning in Grant Park: "Ten days before Juneteenth, and in the hometown of Emmett Till, someone burned a cross. This is a despicable act of violence. The long history of using cross burnings to terrorize Black Americans is part of the darkest periods in our nation. It is the responsibility of every Chicagoan to not allow for anyone to accept this behavior and to remember that the original sin of this country still looms in the shadows. "The normalization of white nationalism by Trump and members of his administration has empowered the worst of our nation. We have cabinet members who proudly wear Nazi tattoos and a systemic effort to wield the federal government to hurt Black communities. We must call out this rampant racism and condemn it once again to the trash heap of history. "CPD must find the person responsible. We also cannot let this steal the joy of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday." Issues : Holding the White House Accountable Racial Justice
