Gillibrand Statement On Death Of Nurul Amin Shah Alam

Feb 26, 2026
Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand released the following statement on the death of Nurul Amin Shah Alam, followingreportsthat immigration agents dropped him at a coffee shop in Buffalo miles away from his home.
The senator followed up on her public statement below with aletterto Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott demanding a full accounting of the events and actions taken by federal agents while Mr. Shah Alam was in their custody.
“The family of Nurul Amin Shah Alam and our community deserve answers on the events that led to his death. I am deeply disturbed by reports that after taking him into custody, Border Patrol agents left Mr. Shah Alam at a Tim Hortons, miles from his home, without notifying his family or attorney before he was found dead. If true, this is absolutely unacceptable. The Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, and local law enforcement must provide a full accounting of what has occurred and ensure this never happens again.”
