Sen. Ossoff Working to Expand Prenatal Care for Military Families

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is working to expand prenatal care for Georgia’s servicemembers and their families.

Sen. Ossoff cosponsored the Improving Access to Prenatal Care for Military Families Act, introduced by Sens. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Andy Kim (D-NJ), to expand access to prenatal care for Georgia’s servicemembers and their families.

This legislation would create a five-year pilot program designating pregnancy as a Qualifying Life Event (QLE) under TRICARE, giving servicemembers and military families the flexibility to switch to a health care plan that meets their needs during a pregnancy.

Currently, QLEs include marriage, divorce, a job change, a move, and the birth or adoption of a child, but does not include pregnancy, making it harder to get prenatal health care.

“Our servicemembers and families deserve great health care,” said Sen. Ossoff. “This legislation would help military families get the care they deserve as they prepare to welcome a child into the world.”

Sen. Ossoff continues to champion Georgia’s military families.

Last December, Sen. Ossoff cosponsored the bipartisan Helping Heroes Act to expand supportive services for families of disabled veterans, including children taking on caregiving roles for their parents.

Last February, Sen. Ossoff cosponsored the bipartisan Love Lives On Act to help spouses of deceased servicemembers retain survivor benefits upon remarriage.

In 2024, Sens. Ossoff and Mike Braun (R-IN) passed into law the bipartisan Military Mental Health Professionals Support Act to help ensure servicemembers have access to the vital mental health care services they deserve by recruiting more mental health care providers.

In June 2024, Sen. Ossoff introduced the Military Families Support Act, which would exempt active duty servicemembers from being deployed, mobilized, or sent to trainings away from their duty stations for a year, helping keep families together after welcoming a new child. The policy would also include servicemembers who adopt a child or those undergoing fertility treatment.

In April 2024, Sen. Ossoff cosponsored the MOMS Who Serve Act of 2024 to help moms in the armed forces access perinatal health care services and cosponsored the bipartisan Improving Access to Maternal Health for Military and Dependent Moms Act to improve access to maternal health care for moms in the armed forces.
