Iowa to Receive Over $15 Million from Grassley-Backed Infrastructure Bill

WASHINGTON– Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is announcing Polk County, Clay County and the city of Merrill will receive a total of$15,342,095to update several railroad crossings. The award will be administered through the Department of Transportation’s Railroad Crossing Elimination program, which was established in the Grassley-backedInfrastructure Investment and Jobs Act(IIJA).
“I applaud Polk County, Clay County and Merrill for their efforts to enhance safety, while bolstering Iowa’s supply chain infrastructure,”Grassley said. “I supported the bipartisan infrastructure bill with Iowa’s future in mind and I’m glad our state continues to see a return on that investment.”
Award Details:
Polk County will receive$11,522,095to build a roadway underpass at the intersection of a dual Union Pacific Railroad track and Broadway Avenue and install new signals, gates and raised medians at two additional crossings.
Clay County will receive$3,280,000to remove an unsafe Canadian Pacific Kansas City at-grade crossing and construct a high-level grade separation.
The City of Merrill will receive$540,000to evaluate highway-rail grade crossing safety and a potential highway-rail grade separation. This project will identify ways to boost highway safety and traffic flows, as well as mitigate a physical barrier posed by the rail corridor.
