Cassidy, Warner Legislation to Improve IRS Customer Service Passes Senate

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) and Mark R. Warner (D-VA) applauded Senate passage of the bipartisan Taxpayer Assistance and Service (TAS) Act , which includes several provisions from the Improving IRS Customer Service Act . The legislation will improve communication between the IRS and taxpayers, streamline tax compliance processes, and ensure taxpayers have timely access to expert assistance, among other necessary tax administration reforms. The bill now awaits passage in the House of Representatives. “Taxpayers should get the help they need without a fight. This package gives the American people a stronger voice and makes help easier to access,” said Dr. Cassidy. “Provisions from my Improving IRS Customer Service Act will bring clarity and relief to taxpayers in Virginia and across the country,” said Sen. Warner. “I want to thank my colleagues in the Senate for passing this crucial bill to make tax season a little bit easier for the millions of Americans who file taxes. I urge my colleagues in the House to pass the bill and send it to the president’s desk to become law.” The provisions of the Improving IRS Customer Service Act included: Establishing a dashboard to inform taxpayers of backlogs and wait times; Expanding electronic access to information and refunds; Expanding callback technology and online accounts; Informing individuals facing economic hardship of collection alternatives. Background Cassidy first introduced the Improving IRS Customer Service Act in 2024, reintroducing it in 2026. Cassidy has also introduced the bipartisan Fairness in Foreign Filing Act , which would protect well-meaning taxpayers from harsh penalties and strengthen the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Provisions from both efforts were included in the TAS Act, which contains 65 reforms to improve taxpayer services, strengthen taxpayer rights, and modernize IRS operations. ###
