Hoosier Receives Medal of Honor
June 18, 2026 Press Release Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Spartz was honored to join President Trump at the White House as Major Nicholas Dockery received the Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military decoration. “Any nation is judged by how it honors the heroes who put their lives on the line for our freedom,” Rep. Spartz said. “It has been my privilege to play a small part in helping recognize Nick’s extraordinary service and sacrifice. His courage under fire, unwavering commitment to his fellow soldiers, and devotion to our country embody the very best of America.” Background Major Nicholas Dockery , an Indiana native, has dedicated his life to serving our nation. He enlisted in the Indiana National Guard before graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and later serving as a Green Beret and Special Forces officer. Throughout his distinguished military career, he earned two Silver Stars, two Purple Hearts, three Bronze Stars, the Legion of Merit, the Soldier's Medal, the Nininger Award for Valor, the MacArthur Leadership Award, and the Military Times Soldier of the Year Award. The Medal of Honor recognizes Major Dockery’s extraordinary heroism during a fierce battle in Afghanistan on October 2, 2012. While serving as a platoon leader, he repeatedly crossed open ground under intense enemy fire to rally and reinforce his soldiers. After learning that one soldier was wounded and another had been captured while unconscious, Dockery fought through enemy fire, killed two Taliban fighters attempting to drag the soldier away, administered lifesaving aid, and helped direct supporting aircraft that ultimately saved the lives of his team. His actions went above and beyond the call of duty, exemplifying the highest traditions of military service. Image Image Image Image
