Senator Schmitt’s Bipartisan Bill to Honor EMS Professionals Signed Into Law by President Trump

Bill Reauthorizes Continued Efforts to Construct a Memorial to Recognize the Heroism of EMS Professionals Who Have Fallen in the Line of Duty U.S. SENATE — Today, U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) celebrated President Trump signing his bipartisan bill into law to extend the National Emergency Services Memorial Foundation’s authority to construct a national memorial in Washington, D.C. honoring the heroism, courage, and enduring sacrifice of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals who have fallen in the line of duty and those who continue to serve. The “National Emergency Medical Services Memorial Extension Act” gives the Foundation additional time to complete the memorial, ensuring EMS professionals are permanently recognized in our nation’s capital. President Trump signed Senator Schmitt’s bill into law the day of the 25 th anniversary of the September 11 th attacks, a worthy fit given the eight on-duty Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics killed on that tragic day. “This bipartisan victory is about honoring the men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting others. EMS professionals run toward emergencies when others are running away, and too many have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. I’m proud to see President Trump sign this bill into law so we can ensure those heroes are remembered with the lasting recognition they deserve,” said Senator Schmitt. The original bill, titled the “National Emergency Medical Services Commemorative Work Act,” was signed into law by President Trump in 2018 and authorized the National Emergency Medical Services Memorial Foundation to establish a commemorative work on federal land in Washington, D.C. within seven years of enactment. The authorization expired in 2025, and the new law extends the Foundation’s authority to establish the memorial through 2032. Instead of using taxpayer dollars, the memorial is fully funded by the Foundation, with any surplus funds returned to the federal government once the project is complete. Senator Schmitt led this bipartisan legislation alongside Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) to extend the authorization’s deadline. The bill was endorsed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), the American Ambulance Association (AAA), and the International Association of EMS Chiefs (IAEMSC).
