Heinrich Cosponsors American Beef Labeling Act

WASHINGTON— U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) cosponsored the American Beef Labeling Act,legislationthat would reinstate mandatory country of origin labeling (MCOOL) for beef. The bill is led by U.S. Senators John Thune (R-S.D.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.).
The legislation would require the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), in consultation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, to develop a World Trade Organization-compliant means of reinstating MCOOL for beef within one year of enactment. USTR would have six months to develop a reinstatement plan followed by a six-month window to implement it. If USTR fails to reinstate MCOOL for beef within one year of enactment, it would automatically be reinstated for beef only.
“American consumers deserve to know where their food comes from,” said Chad Franke president of Rocky Mountain Farmers Union (RMFU). “American ranchers produce the highest quality beef and they deserve to benefit from that. Alongside Heinrich, the legislation is cosponsored by U.S. Senators Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), John Fetterman (D-Pa.), and John Hoeven (R-N.D.).
