Shaheen, Hassan, Goodlander Honor Fallen Service Members at New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony
(Boscawen, NH) – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and U.S. Representative Maggie Goodlander (NH-02) delivered remarks at a Memorial Day event at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery to honor the brave service members who gave their lives serving our country. Photos from today’s event can be found HERE . “It was one of my proudest moments as Governor to establish the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery as a tribute to the courage of those who fought and died protecting this nation,” said Senator Shaheen. “Remembering the service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and honoring their families here in Boscawen is one way we can ensure their legacy endures and their memory lives on.” “It was an honor to attend today’s Memorial Day Ceremony at the New Hampshire State Veterans Ceremony and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation,” said Senator Hassan. “For more than 250 years, generations of Granite Staters have given the words ‘Live Free or Die’ meaning through their service and sacrifice. As we honor those who gave their lives for our country, we recommit ourselves to protecting the precious gift of freedom they fought to protect.” "I believe we are who we remember — as individuals and as a nation. That is the power of Memorial Day,” said Congresswoman Goodlander. “There is no greater love than the love that leads a person to give their life for another, and we owe a debt of gratitude we can never fully repay. So our obligation is a sacred one: to remember, to honor, and to be worthy of the inheritance we have received from those who gave everything for our freedom." Senators Shaheen and Hassan have been staunch supporters of the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery. In 1997, then-Governor Shaheen signed the law that created the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery. It is the first state cemetery east of the Mississippi River to allow the interment of nonresident veterans. In 2018, Shaheen and Hassan secured $2.5 million in federal funding through the U.S. Veterans Administration’s Veterans Cemetery Grants Program to assist in repairs and help expand the Cemetery. Shaheen, a senior member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, Hassan and Representative Chris Pappas (NH-01) also championed bipartisan legislation that was signed into law allowing members of the Reserve Component and the National Guard to be buried in state veterans cemeteries, including the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery. ###
