11.03.2026 | News Jayapal Helps Secure Department of Transportation Grant Award for Safer Streets in Seattle WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) released the following statement following the announcement that the City of Seattle’s Department of Transportation (SDOT) was awarded $9,675,459 through the United States Department of Transportation Safe Streets and Roads for All grant. This grant will support the implementation of safety improvements at six high-injury locations across Seattle to ensure safer conditions for drivers and pedestrians. “This funding is a big win for our city as we continue our work to invest in enhanced street safety in vulnerable and high-risk areas,” said Jayapal. “I was proud to support this project, and in Congress, I will continue to work to bring home federal money to support projects that prioritize safety for pedestrians, bikers, and drivers across our city.” “Thank you to Congresswoman Jayapal, and our congressional delegation for supporting Seattle and helping to secure this $10 million street safety grant. Safety is my top priority, and traffic safety is one of our community’s top concerns. This funding will make a meaningful impact and support our work to prevent traffic injuries and deaths and ensure that everyone in Seattle can get around our city safely,” said Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson. “This Safe Streets grant will add to our Vision Zero traffic safety efforts, funding street pavement upgrades to prevent people driving from skidding off the street and harming themselves or others. It also means we can enhance traffic signals in Pioneer Square and the Chinatown – International District to be more responsive to pedestrians and emergency vehicles. We are deeply appreciative of the ongoing leadership of our congressional delegation for your ongoing work to help Seattle secure this and several other federal traffic safety grants in recent years,” said SDOT Acting Director Angela Brady. This project, titled Safer Streets for Seattle: Addressing Our City’s Evolving Roadway Safety Needs, addresses roadway issues that contribute to serious injuries and fatal crashes throughout Seattle’s most impacted and at-risk intersections and roadways. Through its Vision Zero Action Plan , SDOT is committed to eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries on city streets by prioritizing the corridors and intersections where crashes are most severe and happen most often. With the support of this grant, SDOT will install high-friction surface treatments to reduce skidding, upgrade traffic signals, and conduct further data analysis to identify crash patterns and risks.
