NM to receive grants after Trump admin ordered to lift freeze on education funding
The U.S. Education Department is beginning to release federal education funding to states, including several grants to New Mexico.
In June, the Trump Administration told states that it was withholding previously approved federal grants for “further review” leaving several school districts with no economic support, according to an article byNPR.
The Texas Education Agency announced last week that the administration was finally lifting the freeze and was planning to release billions of dollars in grants on Monday, July 29, including more than $19 million for El Paso County school Districts, according to an article byEl Paso Matters.
The N.M. Delegation said on Tuesday that it pushed the Trump Administration to release nearly $7 billion in federal funding for New Mexico.
The Delegation says $5.8 million in funding for English Language Acquisition programs that support multilingual learners was withheld, as well as $4.7 million in funding for critical adult education programs.
New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez filed a lawsuit earlier this month to “stop the U.S. Department of Education from unlawfully withholding over $6 billion in critical education funding—nearly $45 million of which is slated for New Mexico schools,” the New Mexico Department of Justice said.
“For New Mexico, this funding is an essential investment in our children’s futures – not a luxury. By illegally withholding it, President Trump forced schools to make difficult decisions about staffing, class sizes, and student services. Now, with the delayed release of this funding right as classes begin, schools are left scrambling to prepare. Our kids’ schools never should have been placed in this position.
President Trump needs to understand that when it comes to our kids and their future, we will fight hard to ensure they have all the resources they need to get ahead. And we will remain vigilant to ensure the Trump Administration upholds its duty to distribute funding for our children, educators, and schools. Anything less than that is unacceptable.”
