Rosen Joins Colleagues in Urging Trump to End Threats of Tariffs on Brazil Which Will Raise Costs on Americans

WASHINGTON, DC– U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) joined U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) and colleagues in sending aletterto President Donald Trump urging him to end his threats of a trade war with Brazil. In recent days, Trump and his Administration have been raising the prospects of new tariffs unless Brazil’s Supreme Court ends the prosecution of longtime Trump friend and former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is facing criminal charges for attempting to lead a violent coup in Brazil similar to Trump’s January 6 insurrection. The trade war would raise costs for hardworking American families at a time when they’re already seeing high prices at the grocery store.
“Interfering in another sovereign nation’s legal system sets a dangerous precedent, provokes an unnecessary trade war and puts American nationals and companies at risk of retribution,”wrote the Senators.“Using the full weight of the American economy to interfere with these proceedings on behalf of a friend is a gross misuse of power, undermines America’s influence in Brazil and could derail our broader interests in the region. It will also increase costs for American families and businesses.”
The full letter can be foundHERE.Senator Rosen has helped lead the fight opposing Trump’s reckless tariffs. She signed on to anamicus briefchallenging them in court last month. Senator Rosen helped introduce theTariff Transparency Act, which would require the U.S. International Trade Commission to study and publicly report on the economic effects of tariffs on Canada and Mexico– key trading partners for Nevada industries. She alsohelped passa bipartisan resolution to strike down Trump’s tariffs on Canada earlier this year, which is awaiting action in the House of Representatives.
