Cassidy Joins SAVE ACT to Protect Integrity of American Elections
WASHINGTON –U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) signed onto theSafeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Actintroduced by U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT). This legislation seeks to ensure that only U.S. citizens participate in federal elections by requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration.
“If you’re not an American citizen, you don’t vote in American elections. The SAVE Act makes sure of it,” said Dr. Cassidy.
Background
The SAVE Act amends the National Voter Registration Act, setting requirements for states to verify U.S. citizenship. It outlines acceptable documentation for proving citizenship and requires states to set up alternative verification processes for citizens without standard documents. Additionally, the legislation compels states to purge non-citizens from voter rolls and establishes federal penalties for intentionally registering non-citizens.
