State Senator César J. Blanco Applauds PUCT Plan to Build Extra High
Voltage Transmission Lines to Power Permian Basin Growth
Austin, Texas – Today, Senator César J. Blanco applauded the Public Utility Commission of
Texas’ (PUCT) approval of the first extra high voltage transmission lines in the ERCOT region
— a major step forward to meet the growing power needs of the Permian Basin and strengthen
Texas’ energy future.
The PUCT approved a reliability plan that authorizes the construction of 765-kilovolt
transmission lines — the first of their kind in the ERCOT system. These lines will deliver more
power with fewer disruptions, supporting both energy production and community growth in
West Texas.
The plan follows the passage of House Bill 5066 in 2023, which required the PUCT to develop a
long-term electricity reliability plan for the Permian Basin. After a detailed review and public
input process, the Commission opted to move forward with extra high-voltage lines to maximize
efficiency, reliability, and future capacity.
Senator Blanco issued the following statement:
“I applaud the PUCT for approving these new transmission lines — an important step forward
for the Permian Basin, our economy, and the families who power our state and nation every day.
“These new transmission lines — the first of their kind in the ERCOT grid — are built to meet
