Sens. Ossoff, Rev. Warnock Push Trump Admin to Sustain SNAP Program
Washington, D.C.— Senate Democrats, including U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock, are pressing the Trump Administration to sustain the SNAP program.
Sens. Ossoff and Rev. Warnock, alongside colleagues, are calling for U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Brooke Rollins to use the Agency’s existing authority to fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in November.
Earlier this month, Secretary Rollinsinstructedstates to stop processing SNAP benefits for November, claimingthat the program will “run out of money in two weeks,” despite several options that remain open to USDA to ensure that Americans are able to continue receiving this critical benefit.
“We were deeply disturbed to hear that the USDA has instructed states to stop processing SNAP benefits for November,”Sens. Ossoff, Rev. Warnock, and the group wrote.“Americans are already struggling with the rising cost of groceries, and they cannot afford a sudden lapse in grocery assistance.”
“We urge you to immediately communicate to states and committees of jurisdiction the USDA’s plans to disburse the contingency funding to state agencies and utilize all available legal authorities so that American families can get benefits without interruption,”they continued.
Sen. Ossoff continues working to ensure every Georgian can afford to feed their family.
In April, Sen. Ossoffcalled outCongressional Republicans’ budget proposal, which cut billions of dollars from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) with devastating consequences for Georgia veterans, seniors, children, and farmers.
In February, Sen. Ossoff, alongside other members of Georgia’s Congressional Delegation, urgedGeorgia Governor Brian Kemp to reverse course and apply for the summer EBT program to feed Georgia students in need over the summer break.
Last year, Sen. Ossoff alsointroducedtheFresh Food Act of 2024to address food insecurity across Georgia by helping attract more grocery stores to communities with limited access to fresh foods and to support Georgia farmers.
