U.S. Senator Katie Britt Applauds U.S. Department of Education’s Latest Investments in Alabama’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Historically Black Community Colleges

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) today applauded the U.S. Department of Education’s latest investments in Alabama’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and historically black community colleges (HBCCs). The Department of Education announced a one-time investment of more than $174 million in new funding for HBCUs and HBCCs, reflecting the Trump Administration’s continued commitment to supporting the advancement of these important institutions and investing in communities across the nation. Alabama, which is home to the most HBCUs in the country, received a total of $21,259,618 in funding. Drake State Community and Technical College – $947,755 Lawson State Community College – $2,120,333 Miles College – $1,250,191 Oakwood University – $1,199,509 Shelton State Community College (Fredd Campus) – $1,161,241 Stillman College – $1,512,947 Talladega College – $1,516,171 Trenholm State Community College – $1,381,133 Tuskegee University – $1,767,981 Senator Britt released the following statement after the announcement: “Alabama is home to some of the finest HBCUs and HBCCs in the nation, and the standard of excellence they produce makes these investments well-deserved. I’m proud to be a champion of Alabama’s HBCUs in the Senate, securing funding through my role on the Senate Appropriations Committee, and raising their needs directly with Secretary McMahon. I will continue to fight for these outstanding institutions, and I’m thrilled to see President Trump and Secretary McMahon continue to invest in HBCUs and HBCCs at a historic rate.” Senator Britt, a member of the HBCU caucus, recently introduced the bipartisan HBCU Research Capacity Act , which would streamline federal funding opportunities for HBCUs. In June 2025, she publicly highlighted Alabama’s HBCUs to Secretary McMahon and questioned the Secretary on funding for HBCUs in the President’s Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) budget. The Senator, a former trustee of Stillman College, has directly secured nearly $15 million in funding for Alabama’s HBCUs and HBCCs, including more than $12 million to re-launch Tuskegee University’s historic Aviation and Aerospace Technology program. Tuskegee University awarded her an honorary doctorate in November of 2025 for her work. She also secured $60 million in funding for the 1890 Scholars Program through the Working Families Tax Cut Act . She secured critical funding to support all 1890 institutions in the FY26 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, including $21.5 million for facility improvements; 89 million for research initiatives; $30 million for education grants; $10 million for scholarships; and more. ###
