Mar 10, 2026
Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), the top Democrat on the Senate Aging Committee, released the following statement onreportsthat the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) inspector general’s office is investigating the Trump administration’s alleged mishandling of Social Security worker and retiree data:
“Tens of millions of Americans provide their information to the Social Security Administration with the expectation that their data will be kept safe and confidential. The unauthorized use of Social Security data is a breach of this inherent trust and a violation of the law.
“It is well past time that this alleged breach of security protocol is investigated. I will continue monitoring SSA’s response to these allegations until the American people get the answers they deserve.”
The investigation comes after the Trump administrationadmittedincourt documentsthat staff from the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) may have used Social Security worker and beneficiary data to work with an advocacy group seeking to “overturn election results in certain states.” Additionally, the court filing revealed multiple flagrant violations of federal data security and personally identifiable information requirements.
Gillibranddemandeda full investigation into these incidents after they were made public earlier this year.
