Legislation would promote organ donation by protecting living organ donors from financial and employment-related barriers
U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand issued the following statement following the passage of her legislation, theLiving Donor Protection Act, out of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP). TheLiving Donor Protection Actwould ensure living donors do not face discrimination from insurance companies, codify Department of Labor (DOL) guidance that covers living donors under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) in the private sector and civil service, remove barriers to organ donation, and provide certainty to donors and recipients.
“It is heartbreaking that so many Americans die while waiting for the lifesaving organ transplants they need. MyLiving Donor Protection Actwill encourage organ donation by making sure that people who are willing to donate can do so without jeopardizing their job security and facing barriers to insurance coverage. I am proud to see this legislation pass out of committee, and I encourage my colleagues in Congress to bring it to a vote immediately.”
