Heinrich, Luján Statement on President Trump’s 2026 Budget
Heinrich and Luján: “Trump’s budget is an attack on New Mexicans”
WASHINGTON— U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Committee on Finance, released the following statement onPresident Trump’s Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) budget request, which will hurt New Mexico families to fund massive tax cuts for billionaires like Elon Musk:
"Donald Trump’s budget doesn’t put New Mexico families first — it guts critical programs, slashes essential services for seniors, children, and families, and puts billionaires over hardworking Americans. Simply put: Trump’s budget is an attack on New Mexicans.
“Trump’s proposal will drive up the cost of health care, groceries, housing, and utilities; close rural hospitals and force veterans, seniors, and pregnant mothers to drive even further to see a doctor; drastically cut public school and pre-K funding that helps our kids learn how to read and write; defund cancer research; weaken law enforcement’s ability to fight drug trafficking; and strip resources from wildland firefighters, farmers, Tribes, and rural communities. It also threatens our public lands — paving the way for Republicans’ massive sell-off.
“As New Mexico’s senators, we’ll fight back — to protect Medicaid and Social Security, defend every dollar we’ve secured for our communities, and keep putting New Mexico families first."

As Republicans tank the economy, Heinrich and Luján are putting New Mexico families first and fighting against Trump’s budget.
In May, Heinrich and Luján released a jointstatementslamming President Trump’s Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) preliminary budget request. In their joint statement, the senators wrote, “Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s budget will further tank the economy and throw working families under the bus. As New Mexico’s senators, we’ll fight back.”
In April, Heinrich and Lujánstood up for New Mexico familiesby voting against Senate Republicans’ budget resolution. This was after Heinrich and Luján pushed to amend Republicans’ resolution by repeatedly voting for amendments to lower costs for families — particularly asTrump’s tariffs push America to the brink of a recession. Heinrich and Luján also worked to block cuts to Medicaid, extend the tax credits for health care premiums, and prevent millions of Americans from losing health insurance, protect Social Security, and reverse cuts to the Social Security Administration, including cuts by Elon Musk’s DOGE.
In February, Heinrichattempted to amendRepublicans’ prior budget resolution by offering an amendment to reinstate blocked grants for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence and ensure law enforcement can hold predators and abusers accountable. Republicans voted against his amendment.Watch Heinrich’s video here.
