Rep. Omar Speaks Against Republicans' Budget Reconciliation Bill on the House Floor
June 9, 2026 Press Release WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN) spoke on the House Floor in opposition to Republicans' budget reconciliation bill, which would add $70 billion to ICE's slush fund. You can watch the full video here . Below is a transcript of her remarks: "Thank you, Mr. Speaker. "I rise in strong opposition to this reconciliation bill. "Last year, Republicans handed ICE and CBP an eighty-five-billion-dollar slush fund. "Today, they want 70 billion more – with no reforms and no accountability for the crimes they committed. "And this is at a time when Americans can barely make ends meet. "Let me tell you what that money could mean to working families: "We could provide free childcare for over 1 million children for two years. "We could expand and extend the ACA premium tax credits for at least a year. "And we could cancel the medical debt for a third of Americans. "Instead, Congressional Republicans want to hand more money to the same rogue agencies that have kidnapped and killed Americans across the country. "We know who is really paying for this. When federal agents flooded Minneapolis, our city suffered $200 million dollars in economic damages – at least. "Workers stayed home, small businesses shuttered, and tens of thousands of residents were suddenly thrown into food and housing insecurity. "That is why I will be introducing a bill to redirect ICE’s slush fund to the very communities that the agency terrorized and harmed. "That is who this money should be going to – everyday Americans who are just trying to survive in Trump’s disastrous economy. "I won’t support another dollar for ICE and I urge my colleagues to vote with their conscious and oppose this bill. "I yield back." ###
