Congressman Pat Harrigan Votes to Crack Down on Bail Fraud and Keep Violent Offenders Off the Streets

May 15, 2026 Press Release Contact: Lexi Kranich (814) 380-4408 WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10) voted in favor of H.R. 6260 , the Keeping Violent Offenders Off Our Streets Act of 2025, legislation to prohibit fraud in connection with posting bail, including monetary bail, criminal bail bonds, and federal immigration bail bonds. "People are getting out of jail because someone is manipulating the system and the communities dealing with the consequences deserve better," said Congressman Harrigan. "Bail fraud puts violent offenders back on the street and the people left holding the bag are law-abiding Americans who had nothing to do with it. This bill makes clear that gaming the federal bail system carries real criminal consequences and I was proud to vote for it." The Keeping Violent Offenders Off Our Streets Act amends federal law to explicitly extend existing fraud prohibitions to cover the posting of monetary bail, criminal bail bonds, and federal immigration bail bonds. The legislation targets a gap in current law that bad actors have exploited to fraudulently secure the release of dangerous individuals, ensuring that anyone who manipulates the bail system to spring violent offenders faces federal criminal liability. Congressman Harrigan has made public safety a cornerstone of his work in Congress and will continue pushing for the tools law enforcement needs to keep violent offenders off the streets and out of our communities.
