Senator Collins’ Statement on Tuberville Amendment to Protect Women and Girls’ Sports
WASHINGTON, DC— U.S. Senator Susan Collins released the following statement on her vote for Senator Tommy Tuberville’s amendment during debate on theSAVE America Act:
“My vote for Senator Tuberville’s amendment reflects my longstanding position that transgender athletes should not compete in girls’ and women’s athletics. Policies to the contrary violate the original intent behind Title IX. This is a matter of fairness, safety, and giving girls and women the opportunity to excel in sports.
“People who are transgender deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. But that does not change the fact that Title IX mandated equal access to athletic resources and facilities on the basis of sex—not on the basis of gender identity.”
